Application manual for external and internal putty

Putty is a white cement based fine powder that provides ideal finishing for concrete/cement plaster wall and ceilings. It has high-performance polymers that enhance the property of topcoat paints.

Scope of Application

This product can be applied on interior/exterior surfaces like cement-based plaster & concrete walls & ceiling surface up to 1.5 mm thickness in two coats. This product doesn’t require curing after application.

  Required Tools

  • Mechanical/motorised stirrer.
  • Putty Blade/spatula & Gurmala.
  • Emery/sandpaper no. 180 to 320 for surface preparation.
  • Emery/sandpaper no. 500 for finishing.

Surface/Substrate Preparation

Remove all the loose adhering material i.e. dust, lubricants (de-shuttering material) & oil etc. from substrate surface before the putty application by using emery/sandpaper, putty blade or wire brush etc.

Pre-wetting of the Substrate

To get the best quality performance, pre-wetting is important before the application of the putty. This can be carried out by sprinkling/spraying water.

Mixing/Paste Preparation of putty

For Homogeneous paste preparation: Mix 1 kg of “Putty“ with 350-400 ml water and mix thoroughly to get a homogeneous paste. Re-mix after 10 minutes.

APPLICATION MANUAL

  • Apply the 1st coat of Putty on the pre-wet cement plaster wall/ceiling/cement substrate  surface.
  •  Allow the surface to dry, drying time depends on weather/ambient temperature.
  •  After drying of the first coat of putty, rub the surface gently with the putty blade/emery/sandpaper (no. 180-320) to remove the loose particles.
  •   Apply a 2nd coat of wall putty over dried 1st coat.
  •    The total thickness of both the coats should be within 1.5 mm.
  •   After the application of 2nd coat, leave the surface to dry preferably for 10-12 hours.
  •  The 2nd coat finishing should be done with care (emery/sandpaper no. 500 or 600) without any strong rubbing.
  •  If the undulation is 1.5 mm to 5 mm, Coarse Putty is to be used in two coats and final finishing to be done with Putty.
  • Paints can be used after the 2nd coat of putty application once it gets fully dry, i.e. after 2-3days, depending on weather/ambient temperature condition.

Precautions

  • Ensure that during the application, substrate must be in pre-wet/moist condition.

Mixing of putty is very important & hence extreme care must be taken for proper & thorough mixing for homogenous paste either with hand or mechanical stirrer.

  • Prepared homogenous paste should be lump-free, ceramist and uniform.
  • Only a required quantity of mix should be prepared which can be used within 2 hours. In case of eye contact, use plenty of water to flush eyes. Get medical attention immediately.
  • To avoid skin contact use hand gloves.
  • To avoid inhalation use a dust mask.

APPLICATION MANUAL

Do’s:

  • Before the putty application, ensure the surface is free from dirt, lubricant/oil etc. If wall putty is being done on the re-paint surface, old paint must be removed and the surface has to be cleaned
  • Pre-wetting of the wall/surface must be done for better quality finishing/results.
  • Mix prepared homogenous paste well before every use.
  • Wear safety goggles during application. In case of contact with eyes rinse immediately with plenty of water & seek medical advice. It is recommended to wear a suitable mask during sanding & surface preparation to avoid dust inhalation.

Don’ts:

  • Apply wall putty on dirt/uncleaned surface.
  • Use dirty water for wall putty paste preparation.
  • Use dirty tools and uncleaned mixing bath.
  • Scrub the applied wall putty surface after 2nd coat for finishing.

Apply wall putty >1.5mm, in case of more undulation, Birla HIL Coarse Putty can be used as recommended above. Keep wall putty bags on the floor directly. It may absorb moisture. Stack on pallets with a tarpaulin cover.

Storage

Wall putty material must be kept under a shed/dry place and to be covered with tarpaulin to avoid any entrance of external environment moisture. Putty should be kept out of reach of children.

Handling

“Hooks” should not be used while handling wall putty bags. At one time only one bag to be handled and should not be dropped from a height as it may cause rupture the bag seal provided on the top and lead to material leakages/wastage. During wall putty bag sale to 3rd party/customers, the material must be loaded on defect-free/sharp edge-free surface and tarpaulin/any waterproof cover is to be provided to avoid water absorption during transit either from water being stagnant on-road/sudden rainfall.
